Covington - Ira Doyne Allen, 28, of Rt 1, Covington was killed at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of his parents on Rt 3, Covington. He died from a fractured skull when he was struck by a falling tree while cutting timber. He was born Oct 23, 1941 in Wabash Township of Fountain County, a son of Lewis P and Gladys Cole Allen. He was married to Faye Laughter on Feb 3, 1968, who survives. Also surviving are two children, Joey and Lisa both at home; his parents, 4 brothers, Michael of Rt 1, Covingtpn; Kenneth Wayne of Hagerstown, and Douglas and Kevin both of Rt 3, Covington; two sisters, Mrs. Carolyn sue Taylor of Rt 2, Covington and Miss Myrna Allen, a student at Ball State University at Muncie. A lifetime resident of Wabash Twp, he graduated from Perrysville HS in 1959, and served in the Air Force four years. He was employed by Hyster Co of Danville, Ill and was a member of Cooper's Chapel United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home here with Revs. Alfred Dobbs and James Downy officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. A Covington man was killed Saturday afternoon, (October 25, 1969) when he was struck on the head by a dead tree while working on his father's Covington Route 3 farm. Killed was Doyne Allen, 28, Covington Route 1. He and his father, Lewis had finished sawing a tree. Both trees fell, but the dead tree remained partially supported momentarily, leading them to believe it had fallen. Seconds later, the butt end of the dead tree gave way, striking Allen. Fountain County Coroner Robert R. Shelby attributed death to a fractured skull. He was born Oct 23, 1941 in Wabash Township, Ind. He was the son of Lewis P. and Gladys Cole Allen, Covington Route 3. He married Faye Laughter Feb. 3, 1968, she survives. Also surviving are two children, Joey and Lisa, both of Covington Route 1, Kenneth Wayne of Hagerstown, Ind., Route 1 and Douglas and Kevin, both at home; two sisters, Mrs. Carolyn Sue Taylor, Covington Route 2, and Miss Myrna Allen, a student at Ball State University in Muncie. He was a life resident of Wabash Township, graduating from Perrysville High in 1959. He served four years in the Air Force, reaching the rank of Airman First Class. He belonged to Cooper's Chapel United Methodist Church. Services will be 2 p.m. EST Tuesday at the Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with Rev. Alfred Dobbs and the Rev. James Downey officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday afternoon and evening. -- tch
